
Monday Shelters:
Cooling centers and emergency shelters are open across our area for those without power and air conditioning to deal with these high temperatures.
The cooling center at the Roanoke Civic Center remains open Monday.
In Lynchburg, a cooling center at Sandusky Middle School will remain open 24 hours until further notice.
Thomas Road Baptist Church will have portable showers that people can use and limited supplies of ice.
In Pulaski County, Pulaski Elementary will be open as a cooling center until 8 p-m Monday.
Some of these cooling centers are even making accommodations for pets.
In Roanoke, the cooling center at the Roanoke Civic Center is taking in pets. At least one family member must be at the shelter while their pets are housed there. Only pocket pets and birds need to come with cages but all animals must come with their food and or medication.
In Pulaski County, local veterinarian offices are taking in animals. Anyone without power in need of that service is asked to call the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office for the details.
Sunday shelters
Alleghany County:
Meadwestvaco's training center on Riverside Drive in Covington
Jeter-Watson School in Covington
Both are opening as cooling centers, will serve food, and be open overnight until the end of the emergency.
For those who plan to stay at the cooling centers overnight, county leaders ask that you bring a pillow and blanket, any medicines, and personal care items.
The county and city are asking people to limit water use for drinking purposes only. Do not wash cars, water plants, etc.
The Selma Volunteer Fire Department is offering Gatorade.
Drinking water is available at the Jeter-Watson School, as well as the Bacova II building at the Alleghany Regional Commerce Center in Low Moor until 6 p.m. Sunday.
Bath County:
Bath County High School - Red Cross plans to keep the shelter open through Monday morning
Bedford City:
Christian Life Ministries Church, 737 Blue Ridge Ave. - They have food and water, but anyone who wants to stay overnight needs to bring a sleeping bag, air mattress or whatever else they need to be comfortable.
Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, 1307 Oakwood Ave. - Open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Water provided.
Bedford County
The Bedford Moose Lodge on Route 460, just west of the city of Bedford, is open now, and will stay open overnight. People who wish to stay overnight are asked to bring a pillow and blanket
Bedford County Parks & Recreation, 1257 County Farm Road (The Old Nursing Home) - Open at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, and runs through overnight
Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 13586 Old Moneta Road - Opens Monday through Wednesday (July 2-4th) 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Will provide cooling and shower services only
Botetourt County
Lord Botetourt High School, Daleville - Red Cross plans to keep shelter open through Monday morning
Campbell County:
Brookneal Fire Department, 103 Wickcliffe Ave. - Open 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Lyn-Dan Heights Fire Station, 578 Lawyer's Road - Open 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Altavista Fire Department, 1280 Main Street - Open 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Clifton Forge
Living Stones Ministries has opened The Lighthouse at 601 Granville Avenue through Wednesday, July 4th. It will provide two meals per day. Breakfast from 9:00-11:00 a.m., dinner from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
The First Assembly of God in Clifton Forge is open if anyone needs a place to sleep overnight. Just bring your own blanket and pillow
Craig County
Cooling and care shelter at Craig County High School in New Castle.
It's open 24-7 at this point. No pets are currently being allowed at the shelter.
If you plan to sleep at the shelter, county leaders ask you to bring a pillow, blanket, any medicines and personal care items needed with you.
If you need a ride to the shelter, call the Craig County Sheriff's Office at (540) 864-8127.
Franklin County:
Benjamin Franklin Middle School, Rocky Mount - Red Cross will keep the shelter open until the need is over
Lynchburg
Moving shelter from Heritage High School to Sandusky Middle School, to help more people. Those currently at Heritage will be driven to Sandusky. New shelter open time is 3:00 p.m. City asks people to bring:
Special dietary foods–such as diabetic, low salt, liquid diet, and baby food and formula.
Clothing and bedding: One complete change of clothing including footwear. Sleeping bag, blanket and pillow (cots for elderly)–cots will not be provided. Rain gear and sturdy shoes.
Personal items: Washcloth, small towel, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, tampons, paper towels, toilet paper, towelettes, etc.
Medications -clearly marked with your name, dosage, type of medication, and prescribing physician. You must be able to take all medications by yourself.
Baby supplies: Clothes, diapers, formula, bottles, nipples, food, blankets.
Important papers: Name and address of doctors. Name and address of nearest relative not living in area. Identification and valuable papers.
Miscellaneous: Games, cards, toys, battery powered radios, flashlights (no candles or lanterns), batteries, or other reasonable items you may need.
Pets: An area has been set aside for pets. Pet owners must have the animals in a crate, have vaccination documents and should bring food for to last during their time in the shelter.
Montgomery County:

If you plan to take your pet to a Cooling Station please assure that they have a collar, identification, and are current on their vaccination. If possible, please transport them in a pet carrier.

Valley View Wesleyan Church, 2302 Oakland Boulevard NW (Off of Williamson Rd., beside Round Hill Elementary School) - Opens at 6:30 p.m., until 7:00 a.m. Monday. Welcoming pets (up to 3 per family), owners must bring water bowls, restraints. Church will have water and light refreshments.
Roanoke Civic Center - Special Events Center is site of cooling shelter for people. At 1:00 p.m. Sunday, an emergency pet shelter will open at the Civic Center. Folks with Pocket pets and birds need to bring their own cages. Suggest they bring blankets and/or toys/comfort items to keep with them. Bring their specific pet food and any medications. If available, owners should bring pet vaccination records. At least one family member must remain at the shelter while the pet is housed there. Please bring leash/harness/collar as needed.
Roanoke County

Alleghany County update: The Red Cross is moving its cooling center to one place, Jeter Watson Intermediate School in Covington. They are closing the cooling center at Mountain View Elementary.

Amherst Co.
Amherst County Public Safety has informed our newsroom that the following cooling centers will be open during the peak hours of the heat today:

Bedford

Botetourt County Emergency Services Director Carr Boyd tells 10 On Your Side Lord Botetourt High School will open as a cooling center starting at 9:00am.

Glade Hill Elementary is not open. The only cooling station that is open in Franklin County is located at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.
Halifax County Emergency Services is opening cooling centers throughout the county:
Halifax Co. Middle School is opening at 7:00 PM as an emergency shelter location (providing food, water, and overnight shelter). Citizens are encouraged to bring their own bedding, medications, and medical devices. This shelter will accommodate medical fragile citizens on a limited basis (i.e. those with home oxygen needs). Citizens can bring their domestic household pets to the shelter as well. This is the only overnight shelter open in Halifax Co.
Montgomery Co. -Blacksburg - Christiansburg
A cooling center for those at high risk in the town of Blacksburg is now open. We're told pets are not allowed.
People living in Montgomery County and the town of Christiansburg are encouraged to take advantage of a cooling center set up at the new Christiansburg Middle school. It opens at 1 p.m.
Pittsylvania Co. & Danville
Thomas Road Baptist Church in Danville is open as a cooling center as of 1:00pm.
As of noon today, the City had received no requests for cooling center accommodations. Joe King said that the City encourages family, friends, and churches to help those in need of a place to cool down. However, with hot temperatures and no electric power available in some homes for cooling, the City is also making arrangements to establish cooling centers for those who need them. Joe King indicated that the Fire Department will issue a media release if centers are activated.
Pulaski Co.
Pulaski County will open cooling shelters at Pulaski Elementary (Rt. 11 and Morehead Ln.), Riverlawn Elementary (Rt. 114 and Viscoe Rd.), and Snowville Elementary (4858 Lead Mine Rd.) starting at Noon Saturday.
Radford
A cooling center has also been set up in Radford at Riverlawn Elementary School. It opens at noon.
Roanoke City/Roanoke Co./Vinton
Roanoke County residents with no medical issues requiring treatment who need a ride to the Evacuation Shelter are asked to call (540) 777-8798 to schedule transportation to the Roanoke Civic Center.
The cooling center at the Roanoke Civic Center is now an overnight shelter for those in need. No pets at this time.
Sunday, a cooling center will be open at the Vinton Senior Center at 824 Washington Avenue, adjacent to the War Memorial.
Roanoke County and Roanoke City have teamed with the Red Cross to open a cooling center at the Roanoke Civic Center in the Special Events Center. Officials are asking people to park in Lot E, across from Orange Avenue. Right now, pets are not being allowed. The Roanoke Civic Center has hook-up availability for Oxygen as well.
Crossroads Church in Roanoke, located near the intersection of Hershberger and Williamson (Delray Street NW) is opening at 9:00am.
Thomas Road Baptist Church in Roanoke opened at 1:00pm
Valley View Wesleyan Church will open at 6:30pm and will stay open overnight. Families can bring up to three pets. They will not be supplying bedding, so you are asked to bring your own. They will have water and light snacks.
Rockbridge Co.
Rockbridge County will open up cooling centers at the Rockbridge Baths Fire Department starting at 10:00am and Rockbridge County High School starting at 11:00am
Rockbridge County has opened another cooling center at Walker's Creek Fire Department
Salem
The cooling center at the Salem Civic Center is closed for the night.
