Franklin County Firefighter Dies From Friday Storm Damage Injuries

Franklin County Public Safety says an injured firefighter has died.

According to Sergeant Phillip Young, a tree fell on top of 54-year-old John L. Echternach Jr. as he was headed to the fire station to respond to storm damage on Friday night.

Echternach had stopped to help another driver who's car was hit by a tree when another tree fell on top of him.

He passed away this morning (Monday) from those injuries.

Echternach served in the Boones Mill Fire-EMS Department, and was a firefighter as well as an EMT. He had been with the Department of Public Safety since June of 2003.

He was also an assistant professor and the academic coordinator of clinic education at the Jefferson College of Health Sciences.

Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Flora Funeral Services in Rocky Mount.
