Roanoke Man Arrested in Blacksburg Bomb Case

Posted: Updated:

Blacksburg Police say a Roanoke man has been arrested in connection to a pipe bomb explosion that happened Wednesday near the Virginia Tech campus.

23-year-old Derick Gregory Wilson has been charged with manufacturing, possessing, or using an explosive device.

Investigators say just before 3 a.m. Wednesday, a pipe bomb exploded in the 400 block of Harrell Street in Blacksburg. No one was hurt, but it significantly damaged a red Chevy Blazer.

The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is assisting with the investigation. An ATF special agent says it appears the vehicle was the target of the attack.

In a separate news release, Virginia State Police said they obtained a search warrant connected to the investigation for a home in the 400 block of Bonhill Drive NW in Roanoke. Bomb making materials were found inside.

That release does not specifically name Wilson, but says a 23-year-old suspect was located in Roanoke County and taken into custody without incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
