A Virginia State police "shoot" team is investigating after an Altavista officer shot and killed an 83-year-old woman last night.
A shoot team specializes in investigating officer-involved shootings.
State Police say Altavista officers went to check on Delma Towler, 83, at her home on 10th Street last night after a 911 hang-up.
Investigators say someone shot out Towler's back door when officers were on scene.
State police say Towler then walked down an alley toward another home, holding the gun in her hand.
After repeated commands to put the gun down, state police say Towler pointed it an officer, then she was fatally shot.
The home she walked to was her sister's home, just two houses down from Towler's residence.
The shoot team will give its investigation report to the Campbell County commonwealth's attorney's office.
The Campbell County commonwealth's attorney's office will then make the determination to clear the officer or charge the officer with a crime.
