Route 24 Crash in Bedford County Kills 2 Teens

Bedford County Schools spokesman Ryan Edwards confirmed to Fox 21/27 that both teens who lost their lives in the crash went to Staunton River High School.

The school system brought in additional counselors today to help students and staff deal with the loss.

Edwards called it "an extremely difficult day for students and staff."

Staunton River High School says at least two of the teens involved in the crash go to the school.  The school held a memorial assembly outside this afternoon.

Friends of the two teenagers who died say they can't believe they're gone.

A parent of one student who goes to Staunton River High School believes there are too many accidents that take place on Route 24 near the school.

State Police say two teenagers died when a Ford Mustang and Ford pick-up truck crashed this morning (Wednesday), on Route 24 in Bedford County.

According to Sergeant Robert Carpentieri, of State Police's Salem division, the pick-up truck was driving west on Route 24 around 8:38 a.m., and the Mustang was turning onto Route 24 from Masons Lane near Stewartsville.

The crash killed the 17-year-old male driver of the Mustang and a 16-year-old girl who was in the back seat of the car. EMTs airlifted a third person in the Mustang, and took a fourth by ambulance to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Their conditions are not known.

Sgt. Carpentieri said the driver of the pick-up truck was not seriously hurt.

The State Police accident reconstruction team is on scene, working to determine what caused the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

Route 24 is closed in both directions near Masons Lane in Bedford County, while emergency crews work to clear a crash.

Eastbound traffic is being detoured onto Route 653. Westbound traffic is being detoured onto Route 616.
