Teen Driver Named in Deadly Bedford County Route 24 Crash

9:21 a.m. Monday

State Police say 17-year-old Ashley Brooke Barton, of Moneta, was the driver who died in the crash.

She attended Staunton River High School.

This is the second deadly crash involving Staunton River High School students in the past week.


12:00 a.m. Monday

Virginia State Police have confirmed a 17-year-old from Moneta has died.

Troopers say she tried to avoid hitting a deer on Route 24, over-corrected, ran off the side of the road, went over an embankment, and hit a tree.

Police are not releasing her name until her family is notified.


11:36 p.m. Sunday

Virginia State Police are on the scene of a car crash on Route 24 by Meadors Spur Road in Bedford county.

We're told one vehicle was involved, and the crash happened earlier Sunday evening. Route 24 was shut down in both directions, and was still closed as of 11:30 p.m. Police aren't releasing much information right now.

This crash comes just days after an accident just a few miles away on Route 24 near Mason's Lane Road claimed the lives of two teens, Jacob Baird and Katie Thurston.
