A 47-year-old Blacksburg man is under arrest following a fire at his mother's home Monday night.

According to Blacksburg Police Department Lieutenant Nathan O'Dell, the police department got a call at 8:50 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, about the son of a homeowner trying to set a house on fire.

When officers arrived to the 400 block of Houston Street, they found part of the west side exterior of the home was on fire.

Blacksburg Fire & Rescue was called, and helped a woman and man from the home. Luckily, neither were hurt.

The fire then spread to the front exterior, and inside of the home. Firefighters called in extra help, and needed two and a half hours to put out the flames. The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damage.

After an investigation, Blacksburg Police officers arrested Terry Ray Smith on a charge of maliciously burning an occupied dwelling. He's being held without bond at the Montgomery County Jail.
