Domestic violence increasing in Roanoke

New statistics show domestic violence is on the rise in the Roanoke Valley.

According to Turning Point, a domestic violence shelter run by the Salvation Army in Roanoke, domestic violence is up 22 percent in the Roanoke Valley compared to 2011.

Turning Point Executive Director Evelyn Jordan believes some of that spike is attributed to more victims speaking out for the first time.

"What we see is that as people are getting more confident to speak about (domestic violence)," she said. "they learn how to overcome and get self-confidence back and that more and more people will be divulging."

Jordan asked us not to identify the location of the shelter 60 bed shelter in order to keep the victims safe.
