A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the New River and Roanoke Valleys, central Virginia and the Highlands starting Tuesday night and continuing into the day on Wednesday.
A storm system will move into the region with rain expected on Tuesday. As cold air arrives Tuesday night into Wednesday, the rain will change to snow.
Lighter amounts are expected in the north with heavier snow and higher totals for the north.
For Southside and the Mountain Empire, one to three inches of snow is expected. For most of the New River Valley, Roanoke Valley into Bedford and Franklin Counties, three to six inches of snow is expected. The most snow will fall for areas along and north of I-64 and east of Highway 501 with six to ten inches of snow expected.
The track of the storm could still change. If the storm moves southward, cold air will enter the region faster and bring higher snow totals. If the storm moves more to the north, the warm air will stick around longer and the snow totals will be less.
