On Thursday, folks donned their party best and flocked to The Inn at Virginia Tech for an evening full of tea and fashion, and it all benefits a great cause.
Thursday was the "High Tea with Bling" event. Our own Becky Freemal emceed the soiree, which, on top of dozens of cups of tea, featured a jewelry fashion show, all to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia. The non-profit is dedicated to improving the health and well being of children and their families - while also providing care and comfort during times of need.
Executive Director Laney Mofield was at the event and said fundraisers like this one "is what keeps us in operation. We depend totally on the community's support to fund our Ronald McDonald House. Many times people assume that because we're Ronald McDonald House charities, that McDonald's is our major funder, a major donor. While they are a good friend of our charity and certainly support us through sponsorships, we depend on these sorts of things and out community support to provide for the Ronald McDonald house."
Seventy-five people turned out for the first year for the event. Organizers are hoping to make it an annual event. Fifteen percent of all the jewelry sales will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
