Giles County motel destroyed in overnight fire

Posted: Updated:

Members of the Pearisburg Fire Department fought flames throughout the morning, as they hoped to get a look inside the Rendezvous Motel in Giles County. A place in Pearisburg reduced to rubble, which crews say will make finding a cause tricky.

"We showed up here probably about 8, and there was still flames coming through the house," said Cole Martin, a bystander.

"It's got three roofs on it and we had to tear it apart and we had to get a track-hoe in to take it down and it's been real difficult," said Darrell Scott, a firefighter.

The 15-bedroom motel had smoke billowing out of it for more than ten hours. Crews tried to knock down windows to get a better angle to fight the fire. Mangled metal and burnt bricks are now all that's left of the building that has been around for decades

Buck Gilmore, who owns the business, said he is devastated, because he recently spent money putting new furniture inside the motel and a new roof on top.

Crews say a single worker was the only person inside at the time. The man made it out without injury.

"Anytime we go to a fire and there's nobody injured, we feel good and when we come home with all the firefighters, that's what you work for, said Scott.

Gilmore does have insurance, and says he is unsure whether he will work to rebuild the motel after crews finish tearing it down.
