The town of Christiansburg has signed a $2.5 million contract to buy 60 acres of property.
The new park will be located right off of Route 114, or Peppers Ferry Road, behind the Calmar on North Franklin Street.
Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Director Brad Epperley points to an empty stretch of land, but tells us to imagine the possibilities it holds for the town of Christiansburg.
"It's wonderful, open land, rolling hills, and completely open green spaces," Epperley says.
Most of the 60 acres will be used as a 'recreational hub' for playing fields and picnic shelters. Epperley says the addition of the park space is crucial to the overall growth of Christiansburg.
"A park location of this magnitude will be great for all the citizens. Ultimately, our goal is to make this the recreational centerpiece in this part of town," Epperley says.
Not only are the town's leaders excited about purchasing this piece of land, but the people who live around here say it's going to change their lives for the better.
"I think Christiansburg having an opportunity to improve family life in the area is great," Christiansburg resident Alan Lattimer says.
Lattimer lives within walking distance of the land. He says his family is excited to have a future park so close by.
"It's fantastic. We are seeing a migration in population from Blacksburg over to Christiansburg," Lattimer says, "in large part because Christiansburg is becoming a more family-friendly environment. I think it's a sign the area is growing and we are trying to support that growth."
The idea is to be able to connect residential areas, like where Lattimer lives, to the new land and to the Huckleberry Trail.
The money for the project came from reserve funds. Epperley says purchasing the property is just the beginning and it will take a few years to map out all the details.
