Local Pilot Study May Shed Light on Child Nutrition

Posted: Updated:

Montgomery County schools are part of a pilot study to see if new school lunch regulations are making a difference in the eating habits of students.

Schools across the country started following regulations that require more fruit and vegetable options for kids in school.  This nutritional pilot study is trying to find out if kids are actually eating the vegetables they are being offered.

Lewis Gale Montgomery Registered Dietitian Christa Kuhn came up with the idea to help Radford University nutrition students fill the need for volunteer hours while examining an issue that has been in the spotlight, because of the childhood obesity epidemic across the country.

Radford's Belview Elementary was selected because it has a small student population. Kuhn and the other volunteers are testing to see if nutrition education and food sampling affect whether children choose to make vegetables part of their lunch selection.  Results are expected at the end of April.  Kuhn hopes to present the results of this study to the National School Nutrition Association.
