Roanoke City and Haley Toyota have struck a deal for land near the civic center.
The dealership made a proposal to buy more than 17 acres of land on Courtland Road near Interstate 581 to use for a full service sales and repair facility.
Haley Toyota's general manager, Chuck Baker, says they have seen business grow and they need more than the current five acres they have now.
"The main reason we're doing this is so we can properly take care of our customers," Baker said. "The great thing about doing this is when you build a new facility, the manufacturer gives you more product," which means they'll have to hire more staff. Baker said they still have a lot of site work, re-zoning proposals, and approvals to get through before building can begin. He said they're unsure if they will move locations completely or keep the current location open, too.
The city says the property is worth $1,728,155, but it's being sold for $1,035,000 because of the work required for the conversion.
Roanoke City Manager Chris Morrill says the area would be similar to Shelor Motor Mile in Christiansburg.
"Many car dealerships move out to larger suburban tracts and the fact that they're staying right there in the city and they'll be right near the Ford and Chevrolet dealer, it really creates a regional draw for anyone who's car shopping," Morrill said.
A routine public hearing is scheduled for April 15, before the city can approve the contract.
