Roanoke City Police believe the device was part of an art project.

According to Sgt. J.K. Holt, a woman called police at 9:39 a.m., and reported seeing a drink can wrapped with duct tape, attached to the metal brace on the MLK Bridge rail.  A zip tie held the device in place.

Due to the anniversary of Dr. King death, and the location where the device was found, Sgt. Holt says the State Police bomb squad was called to help, and the bridge was blocked off as a precaution.

A State Police robot eventually removed the device, and troopers eventually detonated it.

Sgt. Holt says investigators determined the device was a homemade pinhole camera used for solargraphy, as part of an art project.  Police believe the device had nothing to do with the anniversary of Dr. King's death.
