Color Me Cameron: Hundreds run to remember Pulaski teen

Saturday in Downtown Pulaski, people were laughing, there was live music playing, and colored powder everywhere.  It hardly seems like an event to commemorate the one year anniversary of Cameron Fitzwater's death.  But his friends and family say it's the only way to show how much he meant to them.

"I don't think Cameron would want us moaning and groaning over him," said Dylan Alley, one of his friends.  "He'd want us to be happy."

They say Cameron brought a lot of life and color to the world -- so Saturday morning, hundreds ran in the first ever Color Me Cameron 5K.

Around each corner, the runners were pelted with colored powder, which they say made it feel like Cameron was right there with them.

"We did his favorite trail," said Damon Akers, one of his friends.  "And it was just really good to honor him.  All the color and everything -- he liked this kind of stuff.  So it was a good way to honor him."

Cameron's mother Terri Fitzwater Palmore says she knew her son touched a lot of people's lives.  But not even she could have imagined how many people came out to support him.

"420 runners showed up to celebrate Cameron's life," said Fitzwater Palmore.  "I'm in awe.  I'm in love."

All the proceeds from the race will benefit the Cameron Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship Fund, which awards four $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors at Pulaski County High School.

During the event, a group from West Virginia -- that never had the chance to meet Cameron -- presented a check for $2,400 to the fund.

To cap off the celebration, every runner was given one last cup of colored powder then they threw it up all at once.

"He'd be like this is awesome, this is cool, any word he could describe," said Fitzwater Palmore.  "He is here today."
