Pittsylvania Co. man charged with Longwood University shooting

A Pittsylvania County man is behind bars on multiple charges related to a fatal shooting at Longwood University Saturday night.

Darryl N. Elmore, 52, of Hurt, is being held without bond at the Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville,  on charges of voluntary manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The 911 call concerning a shooting came in to the Longwood Police Department at approximately 7:45 p.m. Saturday. The shooting occurred in a trailer on a construction site at Lancer Park, a student residence complex located near the main campus of Longwood University. The trailer was in a fenced off construction area.

Upon arriving at the scene, Longwood Police found John J. Robles, 46, of Mechanicsville, Va. The investigation by Virginia State Police with the assistance of Longwood Police, revealed that Robles had been shot and killed. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Robles' body has been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner for examination and autopsy.

Elmore was taken into custody without incident. The circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting remain under investigation at this time.
