Roanoke County extends the extra-territorial arrest agreement to other areas.
For years, the agreement existed between Roanoke City and Roanoke County, allowing law enforcement from either department to act in those areas if they saw a crime. The agreement now extends to Vinton and Salem.
The idea is to increase public safety if a person commits a crime in one area and escapes into another.
"The average citizen, if they get assaulted in the presence of a police officer that is outside of the jurisdiction he is in, he will get help and that means he will get help really quick," says Richard Flora.
This agreement is in effect for all crimes, including traffic violations, assaults, and drug crimes.
Vinton will look at the agreement at their meeting next Tuesday.
