Lynchburg Police named the officer who was shot as Ofc. Gary Hilber.

4:27 p.m.

Lynchburg Police now believe the incident involved two separate officers.

According to Capt. Ryan Zuidema, the preliminary investigation determined that during the chase for the drug suspect, one officer accidentally shot another in low light conditions.  The injured officer has since been treated and released from Lynchburg General Hospital.

Capt. Zuidema also revealed the name of the drug suspect as 24-year-old David Perry Gaines Jr., of Lynchburg.  He is wanted on charges of:

  • Possession with the intent to distribute marijuana
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Schedule I or II controlled substance
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Schedule I or II controlled substance, while in possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

Lynchburg Police Capt. Ryan Zuidema tells WSLS that the officer who was shot, has been released from the hospital.

Capt. Zuidema did not name the officer, nor a suspect in the shooting.

7:50 a.m. Update:

A Lynchburg Police officer was shot during a foot pursuit late Wednesday night, but is expected to be okay.

It happened near the McCausland Ridge Apartment complex on Langhorne Road in Lynchburg.

Officials say officers showed up at the complex at around 10:40 p.m. to serve a search warrant related to a drug case.

During the investigation, a suspect fled from officers on foot. As the officers tried to chase down the suspect, one of them suffered a single, non-life threatening gun shot wound.

Police Chief Parks Snead said no suspect is being sought in relation to the shooting, but did not explain further.

The officer's name is not being released at this time.

1:20 a.m. Update:

According to Lynchburg Chief of Police, Parks Snead, police arrived around 10:30 p.m. at McCausland Ridge Apartments to serve a search warrant for a drug offense. The suspect fled on foot. During the pursuit, a Lynchburg police officer received a single non-life threatening gunshot wound. No suspect is being sought in relation to the shooting. No further information is available.
