UPDATE: Lynchburg Police officer shot by 2nd officer

11:00 p.m. Update:

Lynchburg Police now believe the incident involved two separate officers. The officer that was shot has been identified as Ofc. Gary Hilber.

According to Capt. Ryan Zuidema, the preliminary investigation determined that during the chase for the drug suspect, one officer accidentally shot Hilber in low light conditions.  The injured officer has since been treated and released from Lynchburg General Hospital.

Capt. Zuidema also revealed the name of the drug suspect as 24-year-old David Perry Gaines Jr., of Lynchburg.  He is wanted on charges of:

  • Possession with the intent to distribute marijuana
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Schedule I or II controlled substance
  • Possession with the intent to distribute a Schedule I or II controlled substance, while in possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

1:20 a.m. Update:

According to Lynchburg Chief of Police, Parks Snead, police arrived around 10:30 p.m. at McCausland Ridge Apartments to serve a search warrant for a drug offense. The suspect fled on foot. During the pursuit, a Lynchburg police officer received a single non-life threatening gunshot wound. No suspect is being sought in relation to the shooting. No further information is available.
