Christiansburg Police chief Mark Sisson said the suspect was in custody within 5 minutes of the shooting. Sisson named the suspect as Neil Allan MacInnis.
One of the victims was a part-time employee of New River Community College, the second victims relationship with the college is unclear at this time. The woman who was at LewisGale Hospital at Montgomery, has since been moved to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
MacInnis has been charged with 2 counts of malicious wounding, 2 counts of use of a firearm in a felony. MacInnis completed a Christiansburg citizen police academy course in 2012.MacInnis is being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bond.
Lewis Gale Hospital at Montgomery has confirmed that one woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The hospital says she is in stable condition. The second woman was taken by a Lifeguard helicopter to Carilion in Roanoke. They are not releasing her condition at this time. Christiansburg officials confirm that the suspect taken into custody was male.
Christiansburg officials say the mall is being cleared of shoppers in an effort to make sure there are not other victims or suspect. The do not have the names or conditions of the two women who were injured at this time. They add "At this time, we do not believe there is any continuing threat to the community at large."
Agencies responding included Christiansburg Police Department; Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Blacksburg Police Department, Virginia Tech, and Virginia State Police.
Update 3:14 p.m. A suspect is in custody after two women were shot inside the NRV Community College satellite campus inside the NRV Mall. One woman was treated in the NRV, the other was flown to Roanoke.
Montgomery County schools were on lock down, but are now on high alert. The NRV Mall and surrounding stores are closed until further notice.
Update 2:36 p.m. Officials are providing an update at 3PM. We plan to have Scott Leamon via Skype on TV and online after that news conference.
Update: 2:29 p.m.: Christiansburg police chief has confirmed a shooting inside the mall.
Update: 2:21 p.m.: Blacksburg Transit Christiansburg routes will NOT be servicing the mall area at this time. Ken Heineck says Lifeguard 10 is landing near the mall.
Update: 2:16 p.m.: Multiple police sources tell us they are responding to a potential shooting at the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg. An employee at the Verizon store at the mall says mall staff have been to the parking lot. He says VT Police, Blacksburg Police, Christiansburg Police are on the scene.
An operator at New River Community College received a call from the NRV campus saying there was a report of shots fired. The NRV campus is located in the New River Valley Mall. Calls to the NRV Mall's main office were not answered.
