Blacksburg police say a fight involving Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes broke out just before 2 a.m. Sunday. It happened in a parking lot behind the College Avenue bar, Top of the Stairs, or known to students as T.O.T.S.

The brawl involved two women, according police, before Holmes and an unidentified victim stepped in.  The 911 call came from the back deck at T.O.T.S, which overlooks the Blacksburg Armory parking lot.

"It's definitely disappointing," says student Mark Wilkinson. "This seems like more of an elevated charge so we'll have to see how it plays out."

Wilkinson is referring to the most serious charge Holmes faces, malicious wounding, a class 3 felony, which means, according to the law, the intent to maim, disfigure, disable, or even kill. Students who watched Holmes in Saturday's Spring Football game are not happy.

"I was pretty upset to find out about it," Wilkinson said. "We were all pretty excited for the Spring Game. Everyone was just getting excited for the season and it's sad to hear about it."

The Virginia Tech athletic office released a statement saying Holmes, due to a university policy, is suspended indefinitely from the football team.

"I hope this doesn't become a trend, but hopefully he'll be cleared of his charges and he'll be back fairly soon," said student Ben Steinheimer.

Holmes will spend at least one more night in the Montgomery County Jail. A bond hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
