Post 4/16 communications upgrades helps police in NRCC shooting response

Posted: Updated:

Significant communications upgrades made following the Virginia Tech shootings improved response to the recent New River Community College shooting, several police sources said.

Investigators believe Neil MacInnis walked into the New River Community College's satellite campus inside the mall on April 12th and shot two strangers.

Both women survived.

MacInnis is now in jail awaiting trial.

In 2007, the Virginia Tech Review Panel listed several recommendations on how to improve emergency communications in the Montgomery County-Virginia Tech-Blacksburg-Christiansburg area.

One of the recommendations was to establish a countywide avenue for all emergency operators to communicate with each other during potential mass casualty events.

The Montgomery County sheriff's office now has a channel that all emergency workers in the New River Valley can use to talk to each other during a mass casualty event.

Emergency workers in the New River Valley have also met all other recommendations from the review panel.
