A new effort to raise money at Christian Heritage Academy in Rocky Mount allows donors to sponsor students who make a difference volunteering in the community.
School leaders were finding donors wanted to make their dollar go further, so instead of sponsoring students to run in a 5k race like in years past, leaders came up with the idea to start the Heritage Project, where donors sponsor students to go out into the community and volunteer.
"By that person donating that dollar to the school, it helps the school, and then it also helps, for instance, a group that they're interested in," said Christian Heritage Academy's assistant administrator Tony Quist.
"It's an honor and a privilege to serve to your community," said junior Kenny Tooney.
Quist says each year the school needs to raise $145,000 and the 9th through 12th graders are helping to do that by volunteering.
