The 2ndannual veterans only job fair is coming to the Salem VA Medical Center Tuesday.
Charles Morris has ajob but he's looking for a new one.
"There's always achance to be better, there's always chance to be better" said Morris.
The Army veteranworks in the kitchen at the Salem VA Medical Center. He'll be one of thehundreds of veterans expected at the second annual veteran only job fair.
"The job situationout here is really bad. it's hard for veterans, extremely hard for veteransbecause the employers are also aware of some of the problems that come alongwith being a veteran" said Morris.
"Sometimes when youcome out of the military it's easy to find work and sometimes avenues might bemore restricted" said Tim Woodrum is the chief of social work service at the SalemVA. "All of us have special skills so we want to utilize them. Some people'sabilities are underutilized so this is a good way to match good quality employerswith good quality veterans."
Morris is thankfulthirty employers want to meet the military members.
"It makes me feelgood. that's all we want as veterans is feel like we're wanted again, to feellike we're a part of something because in the past we haven't had that good ofa reputation" said Morris.
The Salem Veterans Affairs (VA)Medical Center, Virginia Employment Commission (VEC), Virginia Wounded WarriorProgram, and Roanoke VA Regional Office are partnering to sponsor the job fair.The event will be held in the Salem VAMC Auditorium (Building 5) on Tuesday,April 30, 2013 from 9:00 am – 2:00 p.m.
Thirty employers will be availableto discuss job opportunities and offer assistance to Veterans in completing theapplication process. Staff will be on hand to assist with applicationsubmissions, resume preparation, and tips and tools to help Veterans get hired.Information on Veteran benefits and resources will be available.
"We realize many Veteransreturning from military service are faced with challenges in finding gainfulemployment. We are very proud to be in partnership with VEC, Wounded WarriorProgram, and many area employers who have expressed an interest in hiring andworking with Veterans. Veterans bring a wide array of experience, skills, andtraining which make them ideal candidates for many positions," stated Dr.Miguel LaPuz, Salem VAMC Director.
