The 2013 Virginia General Assembly was the end of an era, but not because of any new bill or amendment.
Next year will be the first time since the 1960's Lacey Putney will not be in Richmond representing Central and Southwest Virginia.
The Bedford delegate announced his retirement from politics this spring.
We sat down with Putney to talk about his career including some of the relationships he's developed in five plus decades.
One of those is with his assistant Betty Lou Layne, who worked for attorney Lacey Putney before he became Delegate Putney.
"I cannot imagine a secretary for 54 years but she's been working for me since 1959," Putney said.
"It's been quite an adventure for both of us I think," Layne said, reflecting on her time working with Virginia's longest serving legislator. "We always say that we don't know if he's put up with me all of these years or if I've put up with him all of these years."
