Parts of the New River in Wythe and Pulaski Counties have started to overflow into families' yards.
Neighborhoods in the Allisonia area (which is on the border of southern Pulaski County/eastern Wythe County) are seeing high water cover parts of their yards.
The City of Radford says the dam on Claytor Lake was opened Monday night to relieve pressure from the past two days of rain.
The New River is forecasted to crest at about 14 feet around 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
