Roanoke Job Market Slowly Growing

Posted: Updated:

Carilion Clinic, one of the largest employers in the Roanoke valley, is hiring. Almost 300 jobs postings, ranging from nurses and doctors to non-clinical and management, are on their website, says Senior Director of Human Resources Debbie Lovelace.

"I think a lot of it is because of the expansion into population health and improving the health of the communities and the partnership with Virginia Tech," Lovelace says.

"Now is a great time to apply," says Coy Renick, president of The Renick Group, a local staffing agency.

Renick says from May to July is usually the best time to find a job. However, he says this is turning out to be the best year if you are looking in the Roanoke Valley because more employers are hiring. His website alone has dozens of openings he hasn't had in the past.

"It is the best year I have seen since 2007, since the recession started, so yes, it is a good year," Renick says.

Overall, the national unemployment rate is 7.5%. The latest unemployment rate in Roanoke County is 4.6% and 6.4% in Roanoke City.

We spoke to several other staffing agencies to see what types of jobs are out there. They agree the job market is strong right now, with medical and manufacturing doing the most hiring in the valley. Companies include FedEx Ground, First Team Auto, United Health Group and Carilion Clinic.  However, some industries aren't coming back as quickly.

"The recession is gradually ending, but we are not completely out of a recession, like I do not see any in the construction industry that is lagging behind," Renick says.

Many, though, see the growth as a sign of what is to come, and feel soon all of the industries will hire again in Roanoke, bringing the unemployment number down even more.
