Steak 'n Shake's Opening Gives Hershberger Road a Boost

On Thursday, Steak 'n Shake officially opened its first restaurant in Southwest Virginia and nobody may be happier than manager Greg Young, whose commute just got a lot shorter.

"Going from 250 miles down to 15 minutes away is quite nice," he said.

A Roanoke College grad, Young worked at Steak 'n Shake restaurants in Richmond and Fredericksburg before joining the Roanoke staff.

That staff includes around 150 workers that are best described by general manager Michael Howard: "We have a small army."

Thursday was a day Howard and his staff have literally worked months toward, going back to last year when they had to pick a location.

Ultimately, Steak 'n Shake settled on Hershberger Road, a spot that wasn't even seriously considered initially.

"[We] did have pause and reservation about coming here," Howard said. "But the way Cookout has thrived here and just the revitalization, it's just such a busy area."

"It's actually great, especially to bring to this side of town," Young said. "To bring something out of the mall area and onto the Hershberger area, I think is going to be a great addition," which Howard says he hopes will catch on quickly with customers.

For the first few weeks, Steak 'n Shake will be open 10-10. Eventually, it be open 24 hours a day.
