Several technology companies in our area have added jobs, pumping money into our local economy.

The Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council recognized some of those businesses at an event called TechNite.

Sometimes it's about meeting the right people, at the right time, to help make your business a success.

Nathan Latka, the CEO of the technology company HEYO in Blacksburg, says he never misses an opportunity to go to TechNite.

Latka met his first investor at the event a few years ago, which helped put his online marketing company on the map.

He's nominated for the Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council's Entrepreneurship Award.

"I think there's not a better event in Roanoke or Blacksburg that allows people to get in front of the right people and make investments, especially local investment," Latka says.

The event highlights the leading technology companies and entrepreneurs in our area.

"In terms of a business and a company, this is the highest honor," says Derick Maggard, RBTC'S Executive Director. "It's helped people raise capital, it's helped people recruit talent, and it helps them take their company to the next level. It's fantastic."

Kirk Cameron hopes to take his software start-up company Miserware to the next level. He won the Rising Star award Thursday and hopes the recognition will help him continue to market his business.

"It's great to have people recognize what you're doing and trying to make an effort to make people's lives better and they understand that," Cameron says.

Many of these entrepreneurs say TechNite is a great example of the innovation and new technology happening in our region.

"We've got a growing ecosystem, lots of great talent, I think the future's bright for the Roanoke Valley," says Eddie Amos, Chief Technology Officer at Meridium.

Hopefully, after tonight this group will take home more than just awards, but connections to help keep our local tech economy growing in the future.
