Roanoke focuses on revitalizing Hershberger Road

ROANOKE -

When you think of a good place to eat lunch chances are the Crossroads Mall area doesn't come to mind.

But within the last six months that stretch of Hershberger Road has added two popular chains, Cookout and Steak'n Shake.

"The city has encouraged development out here and investment out here for some time," said Roanoke City Economic Development Director Wayne Bowers.

He said a lot of that investment is beginning to payoff and this could just be the beginning.

"Our office has got other inquiries about other national brands wanting to locate in this area," Bowers said. "I think you're going to see a continuation of the growth we've seen here over the last few months."

But that growth almost stalled early.

Steak'n Shake General Manager Michael Howard said there was some hesitation moving onto Hershberger Road initially.

But as they say in real estate location, location, location.

That location happens to be right next to Advance Auto Parts Corporate Office, which is one of the largest employers in the Roanoke Valley.

"(Advanced Auto) definitely played a part in us being here," Howard said. "Just the revitalization of this whole row here on Hershberger made us realize that this is the place we wanted to be."

Now with two popular chain restaurants in place, Bowers said the future is looking bright.

"All the basic ingredients are here and I think you'll just see it continue to grow."
