Central Oklahoma will play for entire state in Salem softball championship

Posted: Updated:

The Central Oklahoma Bronchos have come more than 1,100 miles to play for home.

The Bronchos are one of eight teams in Salem to play for the 2013 NCAA Division II national championship in softball.

It's a double elimination tournament.

The Bronchos start on Thursday at noon with a game against Armstrong Atlantic State.

Central Oklahoma's campus is only about 25 miles from Moore, Oklahoma.

The team flew out of the state at 6 AM on Tuesday morning.

"It was sad," explained Bronchos head coach Genny Stidham.  "The girls were upset."

The team flew to Raleigh, North Carolina where they practiced and "watched at least five or six hours of the news," Stidham said.

They made it into Salem Tuesday night after about a three hour bus ride.

The team doesn't have any connections to Moore except softball.

"We found out that there were some little girls there that played softball that died at [Plaza Towers] elementary school," Stidham said.

The NCAA committee running the tournament said it would allow the team to wear tribute ribbons as long as it wasn't used to cover up the NCAA logo on their jerseys.

Any tribute can also not involve any corporate logos.

Stidham said, make no mistake about it, they're here to win a national championship, and if they represent the resilience of Oklahomans as well, she said that's fine too.
