One group hoping to get a chunk of the $28 million in federal money the Roanoke Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization will distribute Thursday is the Roanoke Valley Greenway Commission.
They're asking for more than $12 million over four years to extend the greenway nine miles from Green Hill Park to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
It's a project that's been in neutral for 14 years due in part to a lack of money.
Coordinator Liz Belcher said the money would come at a critical time in the greenway's development.
<"It is a game changer because it gives us money at a time when the localities are really struggling for money," Belcher said. "It gives us the opportunity to really move forward and get the rest of it built."
If the greenway does get the federal dollars, Belcher estimates the extension could be built in three to four years.
The Roanoke Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization will vote Thursday on how to allocate the money.
