Roanoke commonwealth's attorney Don Caldwell said he will ask a grand jury to upgrade the charges against Wellons to DUI-Manslaughter, charges which would carry longer prison sentences if convicted.

The Roanoke city grand jury will meet on July 1st.

A spokesman for Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital said Wellons, and Frances Green, another victim involved in the crash, have been discharged.

Green tells an incredible story of survival after the initial impact.

Virginia State Police have charged a Salem man with DUI and two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with that fiery crash Wednesday on Interstate 581.

Police said Timothy Wellons, 35, of Salem, is charged with the alleged crimes.

Investigators believe he was drunk and driving erratically.  Police say he started the accident.

Wellons was in the northbound lane in his 2004 Ford Taurus, police said.

The majority of the wreck happened after Wellons cut off an 18 wheeler in that lane, forcing it over into the southbound lane, police said.

Paul Alexander Golding, 36, of Salem, an R&L Carriers driver, died of injuries he received in the accident.

He was also in the northbound lane, crossed over into the southbound lane, and hit Kenneth Graham, 54, of Lexington, North Carolina head on.

Graham, a driver for Fleet Master Express, also died at the scene.

One other Roanoke woman was involved in the accident in the southbound lane.

She survived.
