Restaurants trying to recover from power loss

ROANOKE, VA -

Crews were hard at work throughout the day Saturday restoring power to thousands in Roanoke.

Montanos Restaurant went dark around this time last year because of the derecho and they lost power this time too.

"It was worse last year than it was this year, but it doesn't make it any easier when you have to strip your complete restaurant out and refill it again. It is quite a task and I couldn't be prouder of my employees," said Marty Montano, the owner.

He says they had to cancel some events -- like a wedding rehearsal dinner. Montano estimates they lost around $40,000 last year but only about $10,000 this year.

Around 1 p.m. Saturday power was restored and crews worked tirelessly to prepare for events this evening.

"Sometimes you'd like to see things happen a little faster, but right now I'm just extremely thankful" said Montano.

He says although they lost some of their food during the power outage, U.S. Foods donated a refrigerated truck bed, to keep the rest of their food from going bad.

"The only reason why we did lose a couple of things is because we make a lot of things from scratch and when you make things from scratch without a lot of chemicals and preservatives, that's the risk that you take" said Montano.

So as they set the table for tonight, they know firsthand, it could have been a lot worse.

    According to Roanoke City Police a shooting suspect is at large after one person was shot on the Roanoke River Greenway near the Ramada Inn on Franklin Road. Police say the victim has non-life threatening injuries. The call came in around 8:55.
