Local pools set to break Guinness Record for largest swimming lesson

Posted: Updated:
CHRISTIANSBURG, VA -

Local pools will attempt to break a Guinness World Record and save lives today.

The Galax Recreation Center and Christiansburg Aquatic Center are one of 700 locations around the globe that will take part in The World's Largest Swimming Lesson this morning.

Water parks and pools like the aquatic center will host swimming lessons simultaneously at 11 a.m. with one goal in mind. "We do it just kind of to bring awareness to swim lessons," said Allison Zuchowski, Christiansburg Aquatic Center. "Basically swim lessons save lives, that's the basic reason that we do it. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of 14."

Tens of thousands of kids on five continents are already registered to take part this morning.  Check in begins at 10. The lessons start promptly at 11.
