Roanoke Police rescue jumper from I-581 bridge

ROANOKE, VA -

11:00 p.m.

Roanoke City Police stopped a man from jumping off a bridge over Interstate 581 Wednesday night.

As a precaution, officers blocked the southbound lanes of I-581 at Hershberger Road starting around 9 p.m.  The man had gotten on the outside of the chain link fence on the Liberty Road bridge.

12 officers showed up, and helped talk the man down over a little more than half-an-hour, then helped him safely get off the bridge.

Roanoke City Police have blocked Interstate 581 southbound in Roanoke at the Hershberger Road exit.

There's a situation in-between the Hershberger Road and Orange Avenue exits that officers are working.

Traffic is being detoured off at Hershberger Road.
