WHEW... It smells like a stable in here. OH, that's right. Salem Civic Center is playing host to a bunch of horsies. The RoanokeValley Horse Show is underway this weekend. This is a huge event. It started in 1972 which makes it the longest running professional sporting event in the Roanoke Valley and one of the top horse shows in the nation. Returning this year will be hunters, jumpers, racking, roadsters, saddlebread and Western Divisions. Barrel races, Jack Russell Terrier races and the $50,000 Grand Prix. Get ticket info right here.

Also, the 2013 Bike Virginia Tour is visiting the Blue Ridge, just west of central Virginia. They'll kick off the tour today in the Buena Vista/Lexington community.  They'll ride loop rides from that location all weekend. On Monday the tour heads to Botetourt and returns to Buena Vista on Wednesday. Take a closer look on their website.

In Blacksburg, you're invited downtown for the 6th annual Summer Solstice Fest. Live music, a dog parade, Treasure Island, Beer Garden, a giant sand beach, a Downtown Sundown 5K Run, Wing eating Contest,Water Wars, Carnival and much more! Bring the kids to an old-fashioned flea circus, crafts, activities, and festival foods. The complete rundown of events is online.

And in theaters this weekend: Brad Pitt saving the world from a horde of out of control zombies in World War Z. It's loosely based on the book by Mel Brooks' son Max Brooks. The book is told in flashbacks after the zombie apocolypse, but this happens in real time. Real FAST time. The zombies are running in World War Z. Rated R.

About 180 degrees away is Monsters University. A prequel to Monster's Inc, it tells the story of Mike Wazowski and Sulley learning to be the scariest monsters they can be. I loved the original Disney-Pixar flick and there is a whole new cast of monsters in this one. Monsters University is rated G.

So enjoy the first official weekend of Summer. If you have an event you would like me to spotlight, punch one of the links in that blue box up top and lemme know.
