Botetourt County Man Brings Free Soccer Camp to Roanoke

Posted: Updated:

Erryn Barkett is so passionate about soccer that he's made it his goal to teach as many kids as possible how to play.

It started with a camp in Fincastle and quickly went international.

Last year Barkett took a group to Rio Bravo, Mexico, and taught a free soccer camp to deaf children.

He says it was an amazing experience, but this year he wanted to do something a little different.

"It's important that if we're going to do things off shore, we need to do things on shore," he said.

He brought the group back to the Roanoke Valley, where they will hold a free soccer camp next week at East End Baptist Church.

"I think it's very important to continue to plant things here locally," Barkett said. "We've got some wonderful international flavor in Roanoke and the soccer is actually amazing in Roanoke."

The requirements for the youth camp are simple: just have your own soccer cleats and shin guards.

All kids 5-12 years old are welcome.

Barkett says he is excited to share his passion for soccer with a whole new generation while teaching some life skills along the way.

"The goal is to bring children together and adults together using soccer at the medium," he said. "Playing the game creates the ability to share values, to share friendships, and ultimately we better the game of soccer."
