Bike Virginia 2013 was in Buena Vista Sunday afternoon.
The six-day bike tour across our area has brought out more than 1,300 cyclists from across the country. Over the past 26 years, the bicycle tour has taken place in different parts of the commonwealth. This year, it's going on right here in our area.
Dr. Kim Perry, executive director of Bike Virginia, said the Blue Ridge Mountains are a large draw for people from all over the country who want to come to experience beautiful bike riding routes.
Starting Monday, all of the bikers will move to the Botetourt area, which they will explore until Wednesday.
A number of local businesses are also expecting a big boost in revenue from the event.
"The impact of the hotel rooms of course, the money they will be spending on food, gas," said Jay Ratcliffe, Botetourt County Parks and Recreation chair. "But more than that we want them to understand the beauty of Botetourt and what Botetourt has to offer. And hopefully in the future they will come back."
