When you need emergency care, you want crews to get to you as fast as possible, and the new Carilion Clinic hangar for Life Guard 10 at Smith Mountain Lake is part of the hospital's strategy to make sure people all over our area can get fast medical attention when they need it.
The hangar at the Carilion Complex in Westlake Towne Center was unveiled Tuesday.
The new hangar has a place for crew members to stay overnight while protecting the helicopter from the elements.
Some community members know how important this service can be. Jo-Ann Van Vechten's grandson, Carson Fitzgerald, had to be flown to the hospital because of a go-kart accident. She says the new facility brings some peace of mind.
"It's very critical that we have something like this, the transportation going directly to the hospitals to take care of the emergency issues," she said.
"It really saved me," Fitzgerald said. "I'm very happy that there is one here now because many people like me will be saved."
This is the third hangar in the area: there is one in the New River Valley and another in Lexington.
