Dave Carson was sworn in as a judge of the 23rd Federal Circuit Court Tuesday.
The courtroom was overflowing out into the hallway as Carson was sworn in.
He spent eight years as school board chairman for Roanoke City Public Schools.
And although the members of the school board were sad to see him go, everyone was excited for him to take his next step.
"It is both flattering and humbling," Carson said. "Flattering to be with such fine judges, and humbling to be with all of these folks that are here to share this day with me. It's very meaningful, so I appreciate it."
School Board Vice Chairman Todd Putney is the new school board chairman.
