Martinsville Uptown is giving businesses financial incentive to move into the city through a new contest.
The organization is collecting plans from start-up and existing businesses about moving uptown.
The top three to five businesses will split $25,000, which came from a Virginia Main Street grant.
Martinsville Uptown Executive Director Liz Secrest said they are looking for businesses to not only move into the city, but to be successful.
"We want somebody to understand what they're getting into, to know the steps they need to take, and to make sure they have the knowledge they need to be sustainable," Secrest said. "[It's] for their sake as well as for ours."
So far, eight businesses have submitted plans.
People with new proposals have until July 1 to enter. The cutoff for existing businesses is November 1.
