Roanoke City takes a big step towards making information easier than ever to access.
Starting next month, the city will launch a new GIS (Geographic Information Systems) website .
The site helps residents and businesses find the latest data on real estate, school zones, taxes, and more.
The goal is to keep up with the latest technology, soRoanoke City's Department of Technology is replacing the old GIS website to give people more options.
Tracey Leet, the GIS project manager, put a year and a half of work into making sure the new website runs smoothly.
"Our old site received a lot of acclaim and recognition, so we are trying to be one of the leaders in GIS in the state," Leet says.
The new site will have more advanced searches and tools, and will update information quicker, which will make it easier to find exactly what you're looking for.
"The big thing is the real estate information," Leet says, "so if you're looking for a house in a specific area, it's a great place to go."
You can narrow down your search by location and preference. So if you want to find a residential single family home built during a specific year, you can put all that information in and immediately matches will pop up on a map. You can also look at property cards to give you the information on what school zone the property is in, or if it's in a flood plain.
The site will not only allow you to do multiple searches, but also export the data into a spreadsheet, and print in PDF format.
"It's a more modern look and ... it's more in line with what you see on other mapping sites," Leet says.
The new website will launch on July 1.
