Buchanan man drowns trying to clean out drain culvert

The Botetourt County sheriff's office confirmed Craig Ricker, 42, or Buchanan, died after falling into a drain culvert on his property.

Ricker's wife, Sara Stein, went into the water to try and save him.

Stein survived.

Stein is president of Barn Cat Buddies, a local animal rescue group.

The Botetourt County sheriff's office says a man drowned this morning after being swept into a drain culvert on his property during a flash flood.

The sheriff's office is expected to release the man's identity later this afternoon.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office said the man was using a rake to try and clean some debris from the culvert when he fell into the rushing water.

The man's wife tried to save him.

The sheriff's office said she was swept into the water as well but was eventually able to get free and call 911.
