The Fourth of July came to a bumpy end for 10 people at Smith Mountain Lake when their boat ran off the water and onto land.
The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says it happened around 11:15 p.m. Thursday, at channel B-28.
Officials say that channel marker sign can be very hard to see at night.
No alcohol was involved and no one suffered major injuries. In fact, the boat had just passed a DUI checkpoint.
Richard Dudley, a homeowner who heard the crash, said it's a bad spot for boat crashes on the lake.
"It's just a bad place on the lake, because they don't have a good marker. The B-28 doesn't show up very well, if they dip in to this cove here," Dudley said. "Fortunately the people on board were safe, no injuries."
The driver of the boat has been charged with reckless operation of a boat.
