Local Community Clinics to Get Funding From Affordable Care Act

Posted: Updated:

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, $150 million is set to go to community centers in all 50 states.

More than $2.5 million will be sent to Virginia. Now we're getting a better look at just where that money will go.

Four locations in our area will get a portion of the funding:

  • Roanoke's Kuumba Wellness Center will get more than $87,000
  • The Martinsville Henry County Coalition for Health and Wellness will get $76,000
  • Danville's Piedmont Access to Health Services Inc. will get nearly $115,000
  • In Madison Heights, Johnson Health Center will get more than $81,000

That comes to more than $360,000 for centers in our area, something that will go a long way toward helping people get the health care they need.

"For the first time, many Americans who have been priced out, locked out of coverage, will have the opportunity to get quality health care coverage in a competitive market place," said Michael Hash, the director of the Office on Health Reform.

Officials also say they believe outreach from community centers will eventually bring down the cost health care for everyone by providing coverage for people who may use emergency rooms for their primary care.
