Some Pulaski County students will put on their aprons this morning as they learn about healthy cooking.
They're taking part in the Kids in the Kitchen program with Virginia Cooperative Extension. They'll spend all day making their meals and snacks and focusing on food choices and nutrition, including learning how to read food labels.
Nutrition teacher Sarah Burkett has been doing the camp for three years and says both teachers and parents notice changes in their kids after class. "When we sit down to eat, we sit family style and they'll like coach each other," she said. "You think you don't like that but you should try it. I thought I didn't and it's real cute. They'll encourage and especially since they had a hand on making it, they're a lot more likely to try it."
Student Brad Marion is enjoying the three day camp. He credits his mother for his interest in cooking. "My mom's a baker and I want to be a great cook too," he said.
Special guests also come in to talk about physical fitness, fire safety and money management.
