Virginia Senator Tim Kaine stopped by Westside Elementary in Roanoke to learn about a summer enrichment program called RCPS+.
The program is designed to develop STEM education. The goal is to help grow the talent and competitive workforce in Roanoke. Kaine visited three classrooms.
"The summer program isn't about a test," Kaine said. "It isn't about taking a test at the end of the six-weeks program. It's about learning for learning's sake and that gives them the ability to do some more creative things and some things that are a little more fun because, it is summer, after all, because you do want to keep the kids enjoying themselves."
Kaine also said the emphasis on STEM education in schools is critical, and he's happy to see kids learning about robotics and computers.
