What's the cheapest way to get to New York City?

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE -

With the Roanoke Regional Airport and Delta Airlines pushing the direct flight to LaGuardia Airport in New York City, we decided to price compare with other flights to the Big Apple.

We crunched the numbers using August 9 through August 12 as an example.

The direct Delta Airlines flight from Roanoke to New York City takes less than two hours, costing about $407 round trip.

Compare that to the U.S. Airways flight from Roanoke to New York City with a stop in Charlotte, which costs around $324 round trip and takes three and a half hours.

If you have more time on your hands you can also travel by rail to New York City.

A roundtrip ticket on Amtrak from Lynchburg only costs around $150, although it's nearly an eight hour trip.

Roanoke Regional Airport spokesperson Sherry Wallace said the direct flight is an asset to the airport.

"It's definitely an issue and we're hoping it's an awareness," she said. "I will say, as is often the case with airfare, if you can plan at least three weeks out you will definitely get a better price. Also, if you have the flexibility to stay a couple of nights or stay over a weekend, you'll also see a discount there."

Right now the daily Delta flight to New York City is only about 20 to 30 percent full.

Wallace said the goal is to get that number to 50 percent by this fall.

The airport hopes a new ad campaign with Delta will help it reach that goal.
